Women

Advancing gender equality and improving women's safety in Victoria.

The Office for Women manages policies and programs that advance gender equality and improve women’s safety in Victoria.

Our work aims to support, engage and empower every Victorian who identifies as a woman.

We work with communities, organisations and all levels of government. We support women and girls to achieve the best possible outcomes in all aspects of their lives.

The Office for Women leads on women’s policy, coordinating and supporting gender equality efforts across government. We provide grant funding to community organisations to promote gender equality.

The Office for Women leads the Victorian Government’s gender equality strategy, Our equal state: Victoria’s gender equality strategy and action plan. This strategy is our roadmap for action on gender equality over four years from 2023 to 2027.

We’re also making sure the public sector leads by example. This includes the introduction of Victoria’s Gender Equality Act and establishment of the Public Sector Gender Equality Commissioner.

The Public Sector Gender Equality Commissioner was established under the Gender Equality Act 2020. The Commissioner and the staff in her Office make up the Commission for Gender Equality in the Public Sector. Commission staff support the Commissioner to oversee the Act, and to promote gender equality in the public sector workforce and wider Victorian community.

The Act applies to more than 300 public sector organisations, including:

  • departments
  • local councils
  • universities.

The Act aims to progress gender equality in their workforces, policies, programs and services.
