Volunteering is part of Victoria's identity and volunteers are the heart of our communities.
Volunteers build stronger, more resilient, and inclusive communities and are vital to many things Victorians do.
Through their generosity, skills, and time, volunteers make a huge difference to the lives of people across the state.

Why do we volunteer
Victorians have a proud history of putting our hands up to volunteer.
Doing volunteer work allows you to:
- connect with community
- discover new skills
- meet new people
- give back in a meaningful way.

Ways to volunteer
Volunteering involves giving your time and effort to help others and make a positive impact. This could be once off, spontaneous or structured.
There are many ways to volunteer, including:
- supporting children, young people, and parents – for example reading, homework tutoring or helping with driving practice
- helping people with household activities like gardening or grocery shopping
- participating in emergency management, response and community recovery from disasters – for example, with the SES
- a range of environmental activities such as environmental clean-up and wildlife land care
- contributing time and expertise every so often to community activities and events
- fundraising or advocating for a cause
- participating regularly in a structured way to support delivery of services.

Nominate a Victorian volunteer for an award
If you know a Victorian volunteer – or a volunteer group – who deserves to be celebrated, you can nominate them for a Victorian Volunteering Award.
These awards provide an opportunity to recognise and thank volunteers for the incredible contributions they make to our state and local communities.
Nominate an individual or organisation on the Volunteering Victoria website and read about past winners.
Celebrate National Volunteer Week
Each year for a week in May we celebrate National Volunteer Week. Events are held across the country to highlight the important role volunteers play in our community and to invite people not currently volunteering to give it a try.
Millions of Australians volunteer each year, and this is the time to celebrate their efforts and to say thanks.
Learn more about National Volunteer Week and find an event near you.
