First Nations women have always held valued roles in families, communities and nations. And it’s important they are represented in formal leadership roles and positions of influence, right across our state.
The ECHO program was designed by First Nations women for First Nations women. It provides a culturally safe space to build on participants' unique leadership roles in their family and wider society.
It equips First Nations women with the tools and insights they need to become effective leaders and modern matriarchs.
The 16 participants will engage in:
- cultural activities to promote cultural connection and strengthen identity
- coaching and mentoring support from Elders and program facilitators
- working together as a team – participants will be paired/buddied up as part of the program
- activities to build on the unique strengths, capabilities and experiences of participants.
Elders in Residence will also share their wisdom, stories and guidance with participants.
The program includes two online sessions, the first in mid-late September (one 2-hour session) and a second in October (one 2-hour session.)
The residential program runs Monday 10 November to Friday 14 November 2025.
There will also be a reflection workshop in December 2025.
Now in its fifth year, 62 First Nations women have taken part in the program since the pilot in 2021.
Previous participants have gone on to win scholarships, open their own businesses and take on managerial positions.

You will establish friendships and share experiences with other women and have the experience of amazing leaders and Elders in a culturally safe space, growing your mind, skills and belief in yourself.’

‘Go for it! The ECHO program provides an opportunity to be on Country, meet other deadly women and spend a week listening, sharing and learning from each other. If you’re looking for a unique Indigenous leadership program that puts culture and community first, and guides your leadership from the heart, then ECHO is for you.’
