Ballarat family violence program ready for roll out

Respect Ballarat is a nation-first model to reduce gender-based violence
18 September 2025

Following 12 months of co-design, consultation and collaboration with Ballarat organisations and communities, a place-based model to prevent gendered violence will now be rolled out across the city.

Officially named ‘Respect Ballarat’, the model is about every part of the community coming together to take action for a Ballarat where everyone is respected, safe and free from violence.

The model will mobilise communities and support behaviour change to prevent gendered violence, driven by and for the people of Ballarat.

The model will focus on specific people and places based on what has been learned from the co-design process, in partnership with the local community. It will focus on what work is already happening, where the gaps are, and where the evidence says the most impact can be achieved.

Funding opportunities will become available in Ballarat to support existing and new primary prevention and early intervention work..

Respect Ballarat will be driven by local organisations, leaders, and community groups, with support from Respect Victoria and statewide partners. A local governance committee will hold strategic oversight and drive the work forward alongside Respect Victoria.

Over the next three years, the foundational model for Respect Ballarat will be refined as programs and activities are rolled out and evaluated. This will also make sure they continue to meet the changing needs of these communities over time.
