Increased respite and employment support for carers

Thousands of unpaid carers will be able to access additional respite and employment support thanks to $11.5 million in Victorian Government grants.
28 January 2022

The funding will enable service providers and community organisations to better support the wellbeing of Victorian carers. There are more than 726,000 carers across the state.

Funding to provide additional respite for carers

The Victorian Government has announced that 55 projects will receive funding totalling $9.5 million to provide additional hours of respite for carers in flexible and innovative ways as well as through traditional respite options.

This will create further opportunities for more carers to take a break from their care role in ways and times that meet their needs, and increase the delivery of respite in rural and regional areas and for diverse communities.

To find out more about respite and other services available through the Support for Carers program call 1800 514 845 or visit the Carer services and support page on the Better Health Channel website.

Carers Employment Support Grants

Grants totalling $2 million will facilitate delivery of the Carers Employment Support program and give more Victorian carers an opportunity to access tailored employment support to help them achieve their employment aspirations. The program will support carers to enter or re-enter the workforce, or undertake vocational training, through a range of employment supports. These include pre-employment mentoring to build confidence, practical assistance such as respite and material support, carer relief and post-employment mentoring and support to help carers maintain employment.

For many carers, the challenge of balancing work and care responsibilities can limit employment opportunities. Supporting carers in school, study and work is a key priority of the Victorian carer strategy .

Twenty-two organisations or partnerships will receive grants to deliver the Carers Employment Support Program across metropolitan Melbourne and rural and regional areas.
